Project Description

MATS – AD(H)s meistern is a research-based app developed in collaboration with scientists to support children with AD(H)D and their parents. The app combines so-called strategy training, storytelling, and small cognitive games. It is designed to be used by parents, children, and both together. Printable materials such as worksheets, point cards, and signal cards are included to support everyday routines beyond the app.

I joined the project after the initial concept phase. Early character designs and several screens already existed. My task was to refine and further develop the app visually and structurally. I reworked the UI and overall user experience, including login, onboarding, and existing screens, and created clear screen flows and wireframes in Figma.

Since the app is part of an ongoing study project, the scientific content continued to evolve during development. I worked closely with the research team to adapt the structure of the app while staying true to the underlying concepts and therapeutic strategies. This included regular coordination, maintaining shared documents, and shaping how the content would unfold within the app.

For the children’s section, I drew the 24 comic-style cutscenes based on storyboards by a colleague, animated the characters in Spine2D and designed parts of the mini game graphics. In addition, I created content for the printable worksheets and visual materials used by parents and children together.

Beyond the app itself, I contributed to marketing and informational materials such as sticker sheets, posters, and animated Instagram stories. I also redesigned the logo and was responsible for app store assets.

What is MATS?

I designed Instagram stories to introduce the app’s concept and content and give a brief overview of how it works. Take a look to see it in action.

Character designs

As part of the project, I designed two main characters that children could relate to. Instead of positioning an adult figure as someone who explains what is “wrong,” we wanted to create peers with similar traits and challenges. The idea was that children could see parts of themselves in these characters, recognize patterns in their own behavior, and feel understood rather than judged.

Mats’ character was already defined when I joined the project, although I was free to adapt the overall art style. Matti, on the other hand, was developed from scratch.

I designed Matti with a shy expression, braids, and glasses to reflect her more inward and attentive personality, inspired by characteristics often associated with ADD. Mats’ open smile and expressive face were designed to match the more outward energy typically linked to ADHD.

These were my first designs for Mats and Matti.

Designing the App Flow

I designed hundreds of screens in Figma to map out the structure and flow of the app. These diagrams served as a blueprint for the developers to implement the full product in Unity. I also implemented the children’s cutscenes directly in Unity myself.
